Hurricane Fiona leaves 16 dead in Puerto Rico

The passage of Hurricane Fiona through the Caribbean zone caused the death of 16 people in the Puerto Rico archipelago, according to a report made this Sunday by the Puerto Rican authorities, reports the Efe agency.

“The first surveillance report includes deaths for each regional health administration, as well as some variables. As death certificates are entered into the Demographic Registry, with the confirmation of deaths associated with Hurricane Fiona, we will be able to have greater clarity,” he said. Secretary of Health of Puerto Rico, Carlos Mellado, quoted in a statement.

The Secretary of Health explained that the Institute of Forensic Sciences (ICF) and funeral directors have three days to deliver the original death certificates to the Demographic Registry, so that the process can begin.

In the last week, the Puerto Rican police reported several deaths associated with the devastating effects of the hurricane.

In the North Atlantic, however, Post-Tropical Cyclone Fiona made landfall in Nova Scotia on Canada’s east coast on Saturday, sweeping homes into the sea, ripping off roofs and leaving more than 500 people without power. Canadian authorities have no record of deaths or injuries.
