Almost 38 years after the coronation of King Charles III, the British royal family published the official portrait of Elizabeth II’s son as king this Monday.
The photo was taken on Saturday 6 May by photographer Hugo Burnand.
It is provided, he said The Telegraphthat a total of four photos have been released: probably one of the Queen alone, two of the two together and another image with the rest of the family.
Burnand was in charge of recording everything that happened on the day of the coronation as well as in the days leading up to the ceremony.
The first time Buckingham Palace commissioned Burnand to work was in April 2005, for Charles and Camilla’s wedding. Six years later, he took William and Kate Middleton’s wedding photos.
In the photo released this Monday, Carlos III appears to be posing with three of the key elements he used in the coronation ceremony, secular and sacred objects symbolizing the monarch’s service and responsibilities that have been used throughout the centuries, including more by Isabel II in the official portrait after her coronation, in June 1953.
The Crown of the Imperial State used by Charles III is adorned with 2901 precious stones. In his left hand the orb, a piece made of gold in the 17th century divided into three parts with bands of precious stones symbolizing the three continents known in the Middle Ages. In his right hand is the scepter, with a cross encrusted with one of the largest diamonds in the world, the Cullinan I, weighing 530.2 carats, representing the temporal power of the sovereign.
The King also appears wearing a tunic called the Robe of State, in purple silk and velvet embroidered with gold elements, which had been used by King George VI as far back as 1937.
