At least 12 dead in the Gaza Strip after Israeli airstrikes

At least 12 people were killed and some 20 wounded after Israeli airstrikes this morning in the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Some 40 Israeli Air Force planes and drones were involved in the strikes in the Gaza Strip, territory controlled by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, the ministry said.

In Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, an Agence France-Presse (AFP) photographer saw the body of a man identified as Jihad Ghannam, leader of the armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The Israeli army confirmed the attacks against targets of the Islamic Jihad, a movement that it describes as terrorists, and some of its leaders, “responsible for launching missiles against Israel last month,” as well as relatives and neighbors, including minors.

The explosions come less than a week after the announcement of a truce under Egyptian mediation, which followed a new escalation of violence between the Israeli army and Islamic Jihad, following the death in an Israeli prison of a leader of the Islamist movement, who had been on a hunger strike for three months.
