Berlin wants to prevent Europeans from taking jobs in Russian state companies

The German government is proposing that, as part of the next European sanctions package against Moscow, European citizens be banned from holding positions in Russian state-owned companies, the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported on Sunday.

According to the newspaper, the government headed by Olaf Scholz sent a document to the other European governments with a list of proposals to sanction Moscow, after the mobilization of 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine was announced.

Among the measures is the proposal to prevent citizens of European countries from occupying future positions on the Board of Directors or in the management of Russian state companies, since such a practice constitutes “strategic corruption”.

Offering “well-paid positions in management bodies” of state-owned companies has “long been an important element” in the Kremlin’s strategy to exert political influence in the European Union (EU), says the letter, quoted by the newspaper. .

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, widely criticized for his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, held a position in the Russian oil consortium Rosneft, whose board of directors he had chaired since 2017 and which he resigned under pressure in May, as well as his candidacy to join to the Gazprom gas group.
