739 arrested in Iran in protests over the death of a young man at the hands of the police

Authorities have detained 739 people, including 60 women, in northern Iran accused of participating in protests that began a week ago over the death of a young woman detained by vice squad, the news agency reported. Tasnim this Saturday.

In Guilan Province (north), “739 rioters have been arrested, including 60 women,” Provincial Police Chief General Azizollah Maleki was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Saturday that “the protests over the death of Mahsa Amini require decisive measures to be taken against those who oppose the security and tranquility of the country,” the official IRNA agency said.

According to the agency, Raisi made this statement during a telephone conversation with the family of a member of the security forces who was stabbed to death during the protests that have been going on in the country for eight days.

The protests began on Friday the 16th, when Amini’s death became known after being arrested by Iran’s vice squad for allegedly wearing the veil, and have since spread across the country.

Iranian state television brought the death toll in the protests to 35, including members of the security forces.

Raisi returned to Tehran from New York on Friday evening, after attending the UN General Assembly, where he downplayed the importance of the protests, assuring that they are “normal” and that there is freedom in the country, while making it clear that “vandalism” is not allowed.

The president attended a school year opening ceremony at a school in Tehran and was photographed with young students.

However, Tehran’s main universities have today suspended face-to-face classes and opted for “online” education, a measure that will be applied in the coming week and justified by the authorities with the existence of two public holidays, the anniversaries of the death of Mohammed (on Sunday) and Imam Reza (Tuesday).

The capital’s universities were the scene of protests against Amini’s death last week and “online” classes are taking place, despite the internet being severely restricted in the country for days.

Amini was detained by vice squad on Tuesday while visiting Tehran and taken to a police station to participate in “re-education hour” for allegedly wearing her veil incorrectly.

The young woman died three days later in a hospital leaving her in a coma after a heart attack, which authorities attributed to ill health, something the family rejected.

The death of Mahsa Amini managed to stir the empathy of thousands of Iranians, unlike other occasions where demonstrations were reduced to protest from social groups normally mobilized for economic reasons.
