Footbridge in Finland collapses. There are 27 injured, mostly children.

At least 27 people were injured, most of them children, as a result of the collapse of a pedestrian bridge in the town of Espoo, on the outskirts of Finland’s capital, Helsinki, rescue teams reported Thursday.

“About 27 young people, most of them minors, were injured in varying degrees,” the Finnish emergency services reported after the collapse of a temporary pedestrian bridge at a site where construction work was underway.

The young people will have fallen a few meters to a road, the AFP indicates.

“Several people fell a few meters when the bridge collapsed. The situation is being investigated,” the local police said in a statement, adding that a technical investigation was underway to determine the causes of the accident.

The minors were part of a group of students taking part in a field trip, according to the Finnish newspaper Helsinging Sanomat, which cites a student who escaped the accident unscathed.
