Prisoner draws torture used by Americans in Guantanamo

Abu Zubaydah, a man detained at Guantánamo for more than 20 years, revealed the scale of torture used by the Americans since 9/11. The Saudi national drew pictures of what he and others experienced at the hands of the security services.

There are 40 drawings that he gave to the lawyer. With the help of students and other professors at the Center for Policy and Research at an American university, he wrote a denunciation report.

The British newspaper The Guardian reveals this Thursday, for the first time, the images and the document on the abuses of the FBI and the CIA in illegal prisons and in Guantanamo. Since 2002, the CIA and FBI have tried to cover up the methods they used to interrogate prisoners suspected of being responsible for terrorist attacks.

Videos of the torture sessions carried out by the secret services were suppressed against court orders, and the Senate report on interrogation techniques remains secret nearly a decade after it was completed. However, despite the secrecy, everything was recorded in the memory of the detainee who was subjected to these tortures.

Abu Zubaydah was held in illegal US prisons between 2002 and 2006. He was then transferred to Guantanamo, where he remains despite never being charged with any crime.

The Saudi citizen became the first victim, but also the first witness to the techniques used. Some approved, but others applied outside of the Justice Department’s decisions.

Abu Zubaydah’s drawings are so realistic that the attackers’ faces were hidden so they could not be identified. The now published report says that every minute he was awake became an opportunity for the torturers to train.

Illustrations show how the Saudi was immobilized in a coffin where water was poured, subjected to 24-hour drowning drills and slammed against a concrete wall or floor. He was forced for hours into impossible positions, subjected to frequent anal searches that were actually rapes, humiliated for religious reasons, hung by the hands, naked in front of women, deprived of food and chained for weeks.

The detainee, who is now 52 years old, designed a new situation in which insects and, above all, scorpions got into the cell when he was immobilized and unable to defend himself from any attack. In the few moments that he managed to sleep, he was forcibly awakened by blows, deafening noises and threats.

Nudity, sexual violence, humiliation, and the use of torture for days on end were never sanctioned by the justice department.

Multi-dimensional, multi-sensory torture sessions were designed so that physical and psychological pain could be used to torment prisoners. It was through this continued abuse that the interrogators hoped to condition the detainee into a state of total dependency.

Despite all the consequences, Abu Zubaydah and 119 other detainees never received medical attention. Fifteen of those detainees, including the Saudi, remain in Guantanamo.
