The Polish Defense Minister said on Saturday that an object was detected in Polish airspace coming from the direction of Belarus and that it is probably an observation balloon.
The minister said in his ‘Twitter’ account that radar contact with the object was lost near Rypin, a city in northwestern Poland, located 143 kilometers from the capital.
The communication adviser of the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, Ewa Zlotnicka, told TVN24 that searches had started in the vicinity of Rypin and that they involved a helicopter, drones and ground groups of the Territorial Defense Forces.
The object was sighted on Friday, around 8:30 p.m. local time, near Bialowieza, a city near the border between Poland and Belarus.
Today, at 12:30 p.m., the monitoring was carried out, but the object is no longer visible, Zlotnicka told the television.
Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, there have been two incursions into Polish airspace.
In November, two Polish citizens were killed when a missile crashed in the east of the country, and Western authorities believe it went astray as Ukrainian air forces tried to thwart a large-scale attack by Russia.
Polish political and military officials are also being questioned about another object that landed in the territory in December 2022, but was only discovered in April by a citizen in a forest.
At the location where the aerial object was discovered, authorities say no traces of explosives were found.
