The leader of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Kiliçdaroglu, cast his vote at the Argentine primary school in Ankara, accompanied by his wife, Selvi, amid shouts of “Kemal, president”, advances the Kronos News portal.
Speaking to reporters after the vote, Kiliçdaroglu, who is the main opponent of current President Erdogan, said “spring will return” to the country.
“We all miss democracy. We miss being together, hugging. You will see, spring will return to this country, God willing, and it will be forever, ”he said.
Kiliçdaroglu has gained strength in recent months thanks to the support of a coalition of six opposition parties and the recent approval of his candidacy by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
The HDP, which has been the target of a harsh campaign of arrests by security forces for alleged links to the PKK – including arrests of senior officials and public representatives on terrorism charges – initially said it was not he would present no candidate for the presidency, paving the way for Kiliçdaroglu, whom he ended up openly supporting.
Kiliçdaroglu, 74, has been one of the best-known faces of the Turkish opposition in recent years, particularly after leading, in 2017, a nearly month-long march for justice in the country, which was one of the greater shows of force. against Erdogan since he came to power.
