Wagner’s mercenary group is advancing to take the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut, where some of its fighters were deployed to protect its wings, following the withdrawal of part of the Russian army, the group’s head, Yevgueni Prigozhin, said on Sunday.
On Saturday, units of the Wagner group advanced 550 meters in different directions in Bakhmut, Prigozhin said in an audio broadcast by the group.
At the moment, he added, “1.78 square kilometers of territory” has yet to be conquered.
Of the 48 multi-storey buildings still standing, Ukrainian troops are in control of 29, according to Prigozhin.
“Wagner’s units continue their advance to the west. In addition, artillery and units withdrawn from performing other duties in Bakhmut are forced to close the gap in the Berjóvskaya dam (in the north-west of the country) to protect the wings. cover for the ultimate attack. on Bakhmut”he stressed.
On Friday, Prigozhin warned of the difficult situation for Russian troops in Bakhmut’s wings, where Ukrainian troops had begun to recapture some territory.
“The wings are crumbling, the front is crumbling and the efforts of the Ministry of Defense to somehow smooth over the situation are leading and will lead to a global tragedy for Russia”warned Wagner’s head.
The mercenary advised in a video posted to the military summit to “immediately stop lying” about the situation and invited the Russian defense minister to visit the city.
Prigozhin said he was nevertheless convinced that the Wagner group would soon gain full control of the city, where fighting has not stopped for months.
