kyiv forces claim ‘first success’ in Bakhmut advance

The Ukrainian army assured on Monday that it had achieved “a first success” in the offensive in Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine, where the longest battle since the Russian invasion of 2022 is being fought.

“The advance of the troops in the Bakhmut area is the first success of the offensive” aimed at defending the city that Russian forces have been trying to take since last summer, Ukrainian ground troops commander Oleksandr Syrsky said.

Syrsky’s statement was published by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

Information about the “success” of the campaign has not yet been verified by independent sources.

Earlier, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar claimed that kyiv troops have been “advancing for several days” towards Bakhmut.

“The hard fighting continues. The defense of Bakhmut continues,” Malyar said through a message on the digital Telegram system.

Russian forces continue to assert control of “most of the city” but, over the past weekend, Ukrainian troops claimed the recapture of 17 square kilometers in the Bakhmut area.

The information released by Kiev on the military situation in Bakhmut comes at the same time that the Ukrainian head of state announces via the social network Twitter that he will meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London after his trip to Rome, Berlin. and Paris.

The United Kingdom is one of the countries that provides the most assets to Ukraine’s land and air forces.
