War in Ukraine: NGOs warn of overmobilization of certain minorities in Russia

According to various NGOs, certain populations would be particularly targeted by the partial mobilization announced last week by Vladimir Putin to reinforce Russian troops in Ukraine.

While Vladimir Putin has announced a partial mobilization of Russian reserve forces to fight on the Ukrainian front, NGOs warn of an overmobilization of certain minorities.

This is the case of SOS Crimea (KrymSOS), which denounces the proportion of Tatars called in Crimea, this territory annexed by Russia in 2014. 90% of the summons sent to this region would have been addressed to them, according to preliminary estimates cited. by organization, despite the fact that they represent only 13 to 15% of the population of this region.

“Such a scale of mobilization can lead to a covert genocide of the Crimean Tatar people,” denounces Yevgeny Yaroshenko, an analyst at SOS Crimea.

“A way to get rid of us”

An overmobilization pointed out by the Ukrainian president who deplored a “conscious effort to destroy the Crimean Tatar nation” in a video, recalls The Guardian.

“The Crimean Tatars represent the segment of the population least loyal to Russia, and it was clear that they were very much supported by the recent Ukrainian military successes. Now they are being punished,” analysis for the British newspaper Tamila Tasheva, co-founder of SOS Crimea. and representative of the President of Ukraine in Crimea.

“First they tried to bribe us, then they tried to suppress us and now they see the mobilization as a way of trying to get rid of us,” he added.

“A 100% mobilization”

The same observation in Buryatia, where the association Free Buryatia Foundation does not indicate “a partial mobilization” but “a 100% mobilization”. In fact, the president of the organization has indicated to the guardian having “received and identified more than 3,000 documents delivered to Buryatia within 24 hours of Vladimir Putin’s announcement of the project.”

The Kremlin recognized this Monday “errors” in the mobilization of the reservists, and in particular in the call of the people who were going to be exempt. While those with “relevant” military experience or skills were recruited, eventually some profiles who were over fighting age, sick, or exempt for other reasons were recruited.
