At least six people have been killed in a fire at a 92-room hostel in Wellington, New Zealand, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has confirmed.
“There are six confirmed deaths and it looks like there are likely to be more,” he said.
“It is an absolute tragedy. It is a truly worrying development and of course our thoughts will be with all the firefighters involved and all the victims of the terrible tragedy that is unfolding,” he added.
Earlier, police said the death toll could be less than 10.
New Zealand emergency services speak of “several people”.
“This is a tragic incident for all involved. My sincere condolences go out to the loved ones of those who lost their lives,” said District Governor Nick Pyatt. The protector.
“This is a fire that happens once every ten years in Wellington. It is our worst nightmare,” he added.
About 52 people were evacuated from the building after being notified of the fire.
More than ten fire engines arrived on the scene and had already extinguished the fire.
