Iranian authorities have detained more than 1,200 people, mostly in northern Iran, since protests began ten days ago over the death of a young woman detained by police, local media reported Monday.
“During the unrest in recent days, 450 protesters have been arrested in Mazandaran (north),” said Provincial Attorney General Mohammad Karimi, quoted by the official IRNA news agency.
On Saturday, Iranian authorities reported that 739 protesters had been detained, including 60 women in Guilan, the neighboring province of Mazandaran in the north of the country.

Citing a local official, Fars news agency announced the arrest of 88 protesters in southern Hormozgan province on Sunday.
According to the same source, Iranian authorities have made further arrests in the cities of Zanjan (northwest), Karaj (west of Tehran) and Kerman (southeast).
Mahsa Amini, 22, originally from Kurdistan (Northwest), was detained by vice squad in Tehran on September 13 for “wearing inappropriate clothing”.
That unit is responsible for enforcing Iran’s strict dress code, which requires women, among other things, to cover their hair and not wear short or tight clothing. The young woman died in hospital on September 16, the date the protests began in the country.
The protest movement spread to several cities in the country, where protesters were shouting anti-government slogans, according to local media.

“In recent days, protesters led by foreign agents have attacked government buildings and damaged public properties in parts of Mazandaran,” Karimi said.
On Sunday, the head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, threatened to show “no leniency” to the protesters and urged police to act “firmly” against “those who undermine security”.
According to an undisclosed official report, 41 people, including protesters and police, have been killed in ten days.
Local media announced the deaths of four paramilitaries on Saturday in the “riot” in Tehran, Shiraz (south), Urmia (northwest) and Garmsar (center), bringing the number of security forces agents to nine in recent days. .
Tasnim news agency today released about 20 photos of protesters, including women, on several streets in Qom, a major Shia holy city about 150 kilometers south of the capital.
The military and security agencies published these images of the “riot leaders” and called on residents to “identify them and inform the authorities,” the Tasnim agency added.
Mahsa Amini’s death sparked strong condemnations around the world and international non-governmental organizations denounced the brutal suppression of the protests.
