Report confirms Sarkozy’s three-year prison sentence for corruption

The Court of Appeals confirmed this Wednesday the sentence of former President Nicolas Sarkozy to three years in prison, two of them with a suspended sentence and one with an effective sentence, for the crimes of corruption and influence peddling,

The 68-year-old former head of state, who led the country between 2007 and 2012, remains disqualified from holding public office for the next three years, the AFP agency advances.

According to the judges, the effective year in prison can be served under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.

Shortly after the reading of the sentence, this Wednesday, Sarkozy’s lawyer announced that the defense was going to present a new appeal.

In March 2021, the court of first instance found the former president guilty of trying to bribe a judge and exerting influence in exchange for confidential information about an investigation into his 2007 campaign finances.

The case was revealed thanks to wiretapping. Sarkozy used an assumed name, Paul Bismuth, to communicate with his lawyer Thierry Herzog and the two persuaded then-Court of Cassation judge Gilbert Azibert to reveal confidential information in exchange for a job in Monaco.

Also in September 2021, the former French president was found guilty of illegally financing his 2012 re-election campaign.
