The UN expects the period between 2023 and 2027 to be the warmest in history

The period between 2023 and 2027 is almost certain to be the five hottest years on record, the United Nations warns.

A report released this Wednesday by the United Nations World Meteorological Organization warns of the high probability that the temperature on the planet will exceed the most ambitious objectives of the Paris agreement.

The goal was to limit the rise in global temperatures this century to below 2°C compared with pre-industrial levels of 1850-1900, or 1.5°C as much as possible.

The 1.5°C barrier of the Paris Agreement is not guaranteed to be permanently exceeded, but it is at least temporarily or more frequently.

The period between 2015 and 2022 represented the eight warmest years on record (with a record high temperature in 2016), but the researchers believe that temperatures will tend to rise further due to a combination of greenhouse gas emissions and the El Niño phenomenon.

“There is a 98% chance that at least one of the next five years, and the five-year period as a whole, will be the warmest on record,” the World Meteorological Organization warns.

The repercussions will be dramatic for health, food safety, water management and the environment, the report says.

Alaska, South Africa, South Asia and parts of Australia are the regions that should expect above-average temperatures for the 1991-2020 period this year.
