The initiative, scheduled for June 10, came from the New York Portuguese American Leadership Conference (NYPALC) association, which called on Portuguese and Portuguese descendants in the region to attend the unprecedented event.
“Welcome everyone to the first year of lighting of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge on June 10 in celebration of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities Day. We are asking everyone to join us in watching the lighting,” said NYPALC on its page at the social network Facebook.
The lighting ceremony for the bridge, which crosses the Hudson River and connects Rockland and Westchester counties, will begin at 7:30 p.m. local time (12:30 a.m. Lisbon) and will include the raising of flags.
Later, guests travel to Pierson Park, next to the Hudson River, where they can observe the bridge’s lighting.
Located less than 20 miles north of New York City, the bridge, named for New York State’s 52nd Governor Mario M. Cuomo, fully opened to traffic in 2018 and crosses one of the widest on the Hudson River .
The initiative was celebrated by the Portuguese Consulate in New York, which in turn will celebrate Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities Day on June 1 with a concert by pianist Nuno Marques.
