Zelensky arrives in Japan to attend the G7 summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Hiroshima this Saturday to participate in the meeting of leaders of the G7 and other invited countries that is taking place in the Japanese city until Sunday.

Zelensky arrived at the Hiroshima airport after 3:30 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. in Lisbon) on a French government plane from Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), according to the Japanese state broadcaster NHK, cited by international organizations.

The Ukrainian leader is expected to participate in the G7 meetings and hold bilateral talks with several leaders present in Hiroshima.

The G7 invited to Hiroshima the leaders of Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Australia, the Cook Islands and Vietnam, as well as organizations such as the UN, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

It is Zelensky’s first visit to the region since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Zelensky traveled to Japan from Saudi Arabia, where he was on Friday, to address the Arab League summit in Jeddah.

At the start of the Hiroshima summit on Friday, the heads of state and government approved new sanctions against Russia to try to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance the war against Ukraine.

The group of seven most industrialized countries includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the European Union (EU).

The Ukraine conflict plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

The number of dead and wounded since the start of the war is unknown, but several sources, including the UN, have admitted that it will be high.
