The head of the Russian Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigojin, announced this Saturday the total takeover of the city of Bakhmut, the epicenter of the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
“On May 20, 2023, today at noon [horal local]Bakhmut has been taken in its entirety,” Prigojin announced in a video posted on the Telegram social network, cited by the French agency AFP.
Prigojin appears in the footage with armed men in front of dilapidated buildings.
Wagner Group mercenaries have been involved in the battle for Bakhmut, the longest and bloodiest since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 22, 2022.
So far, there has been no reaction from Ukraine to Prigojin’s claim.
