The G7 was a “failure for the global south” by spending “millions on wars” and reducing UN funding

Several humanitarian organizations considered this Saturday the G7 summit, which takes place in Hiroshima, Japan, “a failure for the global south”, despite the commitment to apply 19.4 million euros in the most serious crises in progress.

“The G7 failed the global south in Hiroshima. They didn’t forgive debts and didn’t see what it really took to end growing world hunger,” said Max Lawson, a spokesman for Oxfam International.

“They can spend millions on wars, but they can’t give even half of what the UN needs for the most serious humanitarian crises,” he added.

The G7 statement plans to allocate 21 million dollars (about 19.4 million euros) to “combat the humanitarian crises that have worsened the most in 2023 and among which is the urgent food crisis”, well below the proposed value by the UN of 55 million dollars (42 million euros).

Several organizations have denounced the reduction in humanitarian aid funds for this region, motivated not only by aid to Ukraine and its refugees, but also by increased spending on weapons.

Global Citizen’s Friederike Roeder said the final G7 communique was “off the track” because it “doesn’t achieve the goal that is really needed: action.”

Roeder criticized the lack of concrete measures and the breach of the commitment to contribute one hundred million dollars (92.43 million euros) a year for climate protection.

“Germany’s role in this announcement is particularly disappointing. The European Union’s performance in international diplomacy is crucial, but it will be impossible if Germany, the largest country, continues to focus its bargaining power on new gas investments instead of lead the way to a future free of fossil fuels,” he argued.
