Meloni leaves G7 summit early due to “floods of the century” in the country

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will leave the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan early, due to flooding in her country, which has killed 14 people, Agence France-Presse quoted a diplomatic source as saying.

The equivalent of six months of rainfall fell in a few hours on Wednesday in Emilia-Romagna, causing “the floods of the century” in this rich agricultural and tourist region in the north of the country.

Meloni plans to leave this Saturday night from the summit of the seven most developed economies (G7), which will last until this Sunday, said the same source.

The final communiqué of the meeting has already been published and Giorgia Meloni has also met with the surprise guest of the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrived in Japan this Saturday afternoon.

G7 summit leaders lent their support to the Italian prime minister, who shared images of the disaster during the meeting’s discussions.

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on his Twitter account that France is “available to provide all necessary assistance.”

The death toll from flooding on Wednesday rose to 14, after five more bodies were found in the Ravenna area, according to local authorities.

The floods caused damage for “several billions of euros”, said the president of this area in northwestern Italy, adding that in 36 hours it rained more than in a six-month period.

The Formula 1 Grand Prix that was to be held this weekend at Imola has also been cancelled.
