PSD respects Italian election results and criticizes those who “normalized the far left”

The PSD president on Monday said the party “respects the manifestation of the will of the Italian people” in Sunday’s legislative session, though admitting his concerns, criticizing those in Portugal who accuse him of normalizing Chega.

“It is a bit anecdotal for MP Catarina Martins and Deputy Jerónimo de Sousa to talk about this aspect and even more anecdotal if it comes from PS leaders in Portugal in 2015, when the PS decided to rule with two far-left parties”said Luís Montenegro, questioned by journalists, at the end of a meeting with higher education associations.

For the chairman of the PSD, “what needs to be normalized is respect for the will of the people, respect for the will of the voters”.

“The left still hasn’t realized anything and the PS has already realized it, but it’s doing it on purpose: the more attacks it makes on this content, wants to give an anti-system concept to parties with parliamentary representation, the more they value these parties”defended.

When asked whether the PSD conceded a possible coalition with Chega in the next round of legislation, scheduled for 2026, Montenegro only replied: “This issue has no relevance whatsoever.”

“PS is pushing hard on Chega to see if Chega occupies a political space, but of course it will be wrong. What will happen is the strengthening of the political space that the PSD represents”he said, reiterating the ambition of “in moderation” to win over those who voted for Chega and IL in the Jan. 30 legislation, as well as others who voted for the PS and were disappointed.

Specifically about the elections in Italy, Luís Montenegro said that first of all “The PSD must respect the expression of will that the Italian people have shown and made their choices free and democratic”.

“We are not indifferent to the results and concerns that include the respect for the European values that the European People’s Party has championed over the years and in which the PSD identifies”said.

The PSD chairman believed that “it is too early” to assess the entire political framework in Italy, and said he hopes that the parties that will integrate the government in Italy belonging to the PPE “have the voice of moderation.” in that manager.

According to partial results from the Italian legislature on Sunday, the right-wing and far-right coalition – led by the Brothers of Italy (FdI, acronym in Italian) and which also includes Matteo Salvini’s League and the conservative Forza Italia party. , by Silvio Berlusconi – received about 43% of the vote.

The center-left bloc, led by Enrico Letta’s Democratic Party, is expected to have 26% of the vote.

Founded in 2012, the Brothers of Italy party, led by Giorgia Meloni, has roots in the Italian Social Movement (MSI), founded by the supporters of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.
