Exit polls give victory to New Democracy

The outgoing prime minister’s right-wing party has won Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Greece, according to exit polls, but Kyriakos Mitsotakis may struggle to form a stable government due to the lack of an absolute majority.

New Democracy (ND), which has been in power for four years, receives between 36% and 40% of the vote, ahead of the left-wing Syriza party, from former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who has between 25% and 29% of the vote. votes, according to polls released by television stations at the end of polling stations.

Behind them, the socialist party Pasok-Kinal will receive between 9.5% and 12.5% of the vote.

The first partial results should be published in the next two hours, but if the ND result is confirmed, the party cannot rule alone.

However, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is seeking a four-year term, has ruled out forming a coalition.

For his part, Tsipras appealed to Socialist Pasok-Kinal Party leader Nikos Androulakis for an alliance, but demands were made.

If it is not possible to form a government in the next two weeks, as many analysts predict, new elections will have to be called, which should take place in late June or early July.

The winner of this second poll would then receive a bonus of up to 50 seats to give them a stable majority.
