China protests to Japan over “attacks” on Beijing at G7 summit

The Chinese government on Sunday lodged a protest with Japan’s ambassador to Beijing, Tarumi Hideo, for “defamation and attacks” against China at the recent G7 meeting in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

In a protest note against “speculation” about China, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong said the group of seven most developed democracies “is fixated on a confrontational mindset and Cold War thinking” and that their actions “contrary to with historical trends, objective facts and international morality”.

Japan, as host, “interfered in China’s internal affairs” by engaging in behavior that Sun defined as “contrary to basic principles of international law,” reads the statement, published on the State Department’s website. from China.

The joint statement from the G7, which brings together France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States and Canada, sent several messages to China.

The text stressed the need to maintain constructive economic relations with the Asian country and asked Beijing to use its influence over Russia to end the war in Ukraine. The document also called on Beijing to renounce “unjustified” territorial claims and resolve the Taiwan issue peacefully.

China’s deputy foreign minister reiterated that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory and said that the resolution of the “Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese themselves to decide” and that Beijing “will not allow outside forces to interfere with the meddling issues”. The diplomat asked Tokyo to “correct its perception of China”, “understand Beijing’s strategic autonomy” and “really promote the stable development of relations between the two countries in a constructive manner”.
