Most of the displaced are with relatives or friends, but about 2,700 people were temporarily housed in hotels, schools, gyms and other centers, authorities in the Emilia-Romagna region said.
Last week, six months of rain fell in just 36 hours in this region of 4.5 million people. About 20 rivers were flooded by the rain, causing landslides.
The water also covered vast agricultural areas and destroyed crops. Although cleanup has begun in several areas, many areas are still under water.
Authorities tried to restore internet connections to hospitals, administrations and schools on Monday.
In addition to human losses, this region – one of the richest in Italy – has suffered economic damage that cannot yet be quantified.
More than 600 streets remain blocked this Monday and the region calculated that 620 million euros will be needed to repair the road network.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has returned ahead of schedule from the G7 summit in Japan to visit some of the hardest hit areas.
Meloni is expected to hold a cabinet meeting on Tuesday in which he can release emergency funds earmarked for the region.
Several private groups have pledged money to help the region’s recovery, including Franco-Italian auto giant Stellantis, which has pledged €1 million. Also Formula 1 and Ferrari each offered the same value.
French luxury group LVMH, which includes Italian brands Bulgari and Fendi, and Kering, owner of Gucci, also donated without specifying the amount.
