The head of European diplomacy ruled on Monday that the Russian Federation’s decision to issue a search and arrest warrant on behalf of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is “unfounded, unjustified and unacceptable”.
Josep Borrell said in a statement that the Kremlin’s initiative against Karim Khan represents a “political decision” and demonstrates the Russian leadership’s “contempt” for international law.
The European Union “affirms its full support for the ICC as an independent and impartial institution”, which aims to “ensure accountability for the most serious crimes” in more than 120 countries, he added.
Russia’s interior minister issued the arrest warrant Friday after Khan issued an international arrest warrant on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin as “presumed responsible” for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children to the Russian Federation.
