Mahsa Amini’s tomb in Iran has been vandalized again

The tomb of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being arrested for not wearing the Islamic veil in the manner considered correct by the Iranian authorities, was vandalized by unknown persons, her family reported on Tuesday.

“The glass on her grave bothers them too,” Ashkan Amini, Mahsa’s brother, wrote on Instagram. The post, however, has since been deleted.

The message was accompanied by a photo showing the broken glass covering the grave and a portrait of the 22-year-old at the Aichi cemetery in the city of Saqez in Iranian Kurdistan.

“If they leave again, a thousand times, we’ll fix it again. Let’s see who gets tired first,” Ashkan said, adding that this is the second time his sister’s grave has been vandalized.

The death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022 in police custody, after being detained by the Iranian authorities for not wearing the Islamic headscarf correctly, sparked the biggest protests against the government and the country’s theocratic system in decades.

The demonstrations began precisely in the Aichi cemetery on September 17, the day after the death of the young woman. In this place, Iranian women shouted for the first time the phrase “woman, life, freedom” – widely used in protests – and burned their veils.

The protests subsided after a strong repression by the Government, which caused around 500 deaths and thousands of arrests, in addition to seven executions, one of them public.

Small protests took place again last Friday in various cities across the country, prompted by the execution that day of three protesters for crimes allegedly committed during the protests.

Of all the forms of protest and disobedience, the only one that survived was the rejection of the veil by many women, despite the authorities’ attempts to reinstate the use of this garment.
