Journalist and former Mexican official assassinated in central Mexico

Journalist and former public official Marco Aurelio Ramírez, 69, was shot dead on Tuesday in the Puebla region of central Mexico, local authorities said.

Marco Aurelio Ramírez, who was currently collaborating on a radio program, was assassinated as he was leaving his home in the city of Tehuacán. He worked for decades in various media, before becoming an official in the municipality of Tehuacán.

The Public Ministry indicated that it opened an investigation.

The Mexican branch of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) stated that Ramírez, as a public official, had contributed to the arrest of suspected criminals.

RSF called for a swift and transparent investigation to determine “whether the murder was related to his work as a city official or to his journalistic practice.”

More than 150 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000, according to RSF.
