Mexican journalist and former civil servant murdered in central Mexico

Journalist and former public servant Marco Aurelio Ramírez, 69, was shot dead in the Puebla region of central Mexico on Tuesday, local authorities said.

Marco Aurelio Ramírez, who is currently working on a radio show, was killed as he left his home in the city of Tehuacán. He had worked in various media for decades before becoming an official in the municipality of Tehuacán.

The Public Prosecution Service has indicated that it has opened an investigation.

The Mexican branch of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) stated that as a government official, Ramírez contributed to the arrest of suspected criminals.

RSF called for a prompt and transparent investigation to determine “whether the murder was related to his work as a city official or his journalistic practice.”

More than 150 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000, according to RSF.
