At least four dead in suicide bomb attack in northern Pakistan

Four people were killed at a checkpoint in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday in a suicide bomb attack, local officials said.

The fatalities, two soldiers, a policeman and a civilian, were near a military checkpoint in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district, a province of Waziristan bordering Afghanistan where the Pakistani Taliban groups known as Tehreek-e-Taliban are concentrated. Pakistan (TTP).

Police said several civilians were injured.

So far, this suicide attack has not been claimed despite suspicions falling on the TTP fighters.

In the last six months, the TTP has intensified its attacks, since it unilaterally ended a ceasefire with the Pakistani government that had been negotiated by Afghanistan last year.

On Wednesday, the TTP claimed responsibility for an attack carried out on Tuesday against an oil refinery owned by MOL Pakistan Oil and Gas (a European multinational) in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district, close to the Afghan border.

In the attack on Tuesday, two guards were killed.

Although a separate group, the TTP remains close to the Afghan Taliban, who seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021, following the withdrawal of US and NATO forces (including Portugal) after two decades of war.
