The house where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889, in Braunau am Inn, will be used to educate and train Austrian police officers. The authorities did not know what to do with the building until now.
The 17th-century house in Braunau am Inn near the German border was purchased by the Austrian government in 2016 under a mandatory purchase order, following a protracted legal battle.
According to the authorities, work to convert the house into a training center will start in the autumn and cost about 20 million euros.
The decision met with mixed reactions, but the possibility of “demolition and transformation of the house into a memorial center is out of the question,” said members of an expert committee.
Most Austrians demonstrated against this decision by the authorities. About 53% of the respondents believe that the building should be transformed into an establishment dedicated to themes such as national socialism, anti-fascism, tolerance and peace.
