South Carolina voted Wednesday to ban abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, banning access to abortion in nearly all southern states.
Republicans have tried several times to pass this law in the upper house of that southeastern US state, made up mostly of men, in the face of opposition from five senators, three of whom, Republicans, defy their party’s instructions.
During the debates, Republican Sandy Senn accused her male colleagues of “symbolically hitting women by repeatedly raising the issue of abortion.”
But anti-abortion senators finally mustered enough votes to vote in favor of the measure, which will have consequences for abortion access because, at six weeks pregnant, women may not even know they are pregnant.
Before becoming law, the proposal approved this Thursday will be signed by Republican Governor Henry McMaster, who has made no secret of his intentions.
“I am looking forward to signing this text to make it law as soon as possible,” he rejoiced on Twitter, explaining that, in this way, his State would protect “more innocent lives.”
The Supreme Court of the United States, in June, revoked the constitutional protection of the right to abortion, leaving the states free to legislate on the subject and, since then, a fortnight has been prohibited on their soil.
South Carolina, surrounded by several states that have banned abortion, has become a paradise for women who want to terminate their pregnancies.
