Former Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos França, who held the position during the government of Jair Bolsonaro, was appointed the country’s ambassador to Canada, which has already granted him the credential, the executive reported Thursday.
The appointment of França, a career diplomat, still must be approved by the Senate, which traditionally approves government proposals for posts abroad.
França was Minister of Foreign Affairs between March 2021 and December 2022 and replaced at the time the controversial minister Ernesto Araújo, a diplomat linked to the international extreme right, whose positions even generated conflicts with the more moderate conservatism that also supported Bolsonaro.
In his two years as Foreign Minister, França kept a low profile and put aside the radicalism imposed by Araújo, arguing that Brazilian diplomacy must confront “totalitarian globalism” and “cultural Marxism” that, in his opinion, dominate international organizations. .
Carlos França, 59, entered the diplomatic career in 1991 and held various positions in the Brazilian embassies in Washington, Asunción and La Paz, and between 2019 and 2020 he was head of ceremonial for the Presidency.
