The Moldovan parliament on Thursday approved a resolution declaring the course of European integration and accession to the European Union “irreversible”, a week ahead of the European Political Community summit and despite pro-Russian opposition sentiment.
“It is declared that the irreversible European integration and accession to the European Union (EU) is from now on a priority national project of Moldova, of the whole society and of all political forces,” says the document quoted by Efe.
The text asks the parties to demonstrate “maturity, unity and solidarity” to strengthen political and social dialogue for the national interest.
The document calls on all political formations and civil society to unconditionally support the fulfillment of the obligations arising from the application for EU membership, which granted Moldova candidate status in June 2022.
The resolution also asks the government to do what it can to meet the criteria before entering accession negotiations.
The resolution was supported by the 55 deputies of the ruling Action and Solidarity party, with a total of 101 seats, but was rejected by the pro-Russian opposition, which demanded a referendum.
Moldova, a country that has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, will host the European Political Community summit on June 1, which will be attended by more than 40 leaders.
The first edition of this event took place in Prague in October and brought together 44 leaders from the European continent.
The new format brings together the EU-27 and several neighboring states, including the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Serbia.
EU foreign ministers this week agreed to launch a new civilian mission in Moldova to support the country in strengthening the resilience of its security sector in crisis management and countering hybrid threats, citing Russia.
