At least three migrants die in shipwreck off Mykonos, Greece

Three refugees have been found dead in the north of the Greek island of Mykonos after a shipwreck occurred this morning, according to the Greek coast guard.

According to the first official information, two women and one man, who have not yet been identified, died and rescue operations continue at the site.

Survivors of the sinking told the Greek authorities that three other people are still missing.

Two Coast Guard boats and a helicopter were deployed for the search and rescue operation.

In recent months, migrants and refugees have attempted to cross the sea directly from the Turkish coast to Italy via a “new route through” the Cyclades, a group of Greek islands popular with tourists.

According to non-governmental organizations, the new route avoids the northern Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, where, according to testimonies, the authorities refuse to accept migrants.

Athens rejects the accusations, despite the testimonies collected by non-governmental organizations of migrants.

According to the rules of the European bloc, the first country in which a migrant enters the European Union is responsible for the respective asylum application.

Last Friday, the American newspaper New York Times published a video showing a group of migrants, including a baby, being transferred from the Greek island of Lesbos to a Greek coast guard ship, before being abandoned on a “raft inflatable life buoy that has drifted.” .

Interviewed by CNN television, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the government is “conducting an investigation” into the New York Times publication.
