Pope Francis lamented this Sunday the number of wars and conflicts in the world and expressed his disbelief at what Man can do, during the homily of the Pentecost Mass celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Pope, who had to suspend his schedule on Friday due to a fever, resumed his activities on Saturday and today presided over a celebration in which Catholics commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.
During his homily, Francis lamented that there is so much discord and division in today’s world: “We are all connected and yet we find ourselves disconnected from one another, anesthetized by indifference and oppressed by loneliness.”
“Many wars, many conflicts; The evil that Man can do seems incredible”, lamented the Pope, stating, however, that “in reality, what fuels hostilities is the spirit of division, the devil, whose name means precisely the one who divides”.
According to Francis, the devil “likes antagonism, injustice, and slander. And in the face of the evil of discord, our efforts to build harmony are not enough.
The Argentine pontiff also called for there to be no divisions in the Church because “if the Church becomes polarized, the heart breaks.”
“Let’s not waste time criticizing others and getting angry with ourselves, but let’s call on the Spirit,” he urged.
Francis ended the homily by invoking the Holy Spirit to renew “the face of the earth” and be a “gift of gifts”, “harmony of the Church”, “spirit of forgiveness” and “harmony of the heart”.
