Francis deplored the number of wars and conflicts in the world this Sunday and expressed disbelief at what man can do, during the Pentecost Mass homily celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The pope, who had to suspend his agenda due to fever on Friday, resumed his activities on Saturday and presided over a celebration this Sunday in which Catholics commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.
During the homily, Francis lamented that there is so much discord and division in the world today: “We are all connected and yet we find ourselves apart, numbed by indifference and oppressed by loneliness.”
“Many wars, many conflicts; it seems unbelievable how much harm man can do”, the pope lamented, but he stated, however, that “in reality the hostilities are the spirit of division, the devil, whose name means precisely one who divides”.
According to Francisco, the devil “loves contradictions, injustice and slander. And despite the evil of discord, our efforts to build harmony are not enough”.
The Argentine pope also called for no division in the church, because “when the church becomes polarized, the heart breaks.” “Let’s not waste time criticizing others and getting angry with ourselves, but let’s invoke the Spirit,” he urged.
Francis ended the homily by invoking the Holy Spirit to renew “the face of the earth” and be “gift of gifts”, “harmony of the Church”, “spirit of forgiveness” and “harmony of the heart”.
