The Popular Party will be, according to all indications, the great winner of the municipal and regional elections in Spain. Still without definitive results, the first projections indicate that the Spanish gave the majority of votes to the conservative party.
The PP devastates the Spanish capital and achieves an absolute majority in the government of the Community of Madrid. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, as expected, maintains the government of the region, gets more than 70 deputies and can form a government without having to resort to Vox. The Madrid City Council will also be governed by the PP, with an unexpected absolute majority for José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who did not expect such an expressive victory.
In addition to the capital, the PP also manages to take over some key governments on the left. One of them is that of the Valencian Community, governed by the socialist Ximo Puig since 2015, which would now return to the hands of the PP. The same thing happens in Aragon and, in Castilla La Mancha, the exit polls point to a very even result and the possibility of a right-wing government, made up of PP and Vox.
As for the municipalities, the main casualty of the PSOE would be the Seville City Council. In Barcelona, where the victory of the socialist Jaume Collboni seemed certain, Ada Colau held out and was able to maintain the majority of the vote.
Another important piece of information is the rise of the far-right party, Vox, which is consolidating and entering almost all parliaments.
An eye on the legislature
If the projections are confirmed, these are important results for the Popular Party which, after seven consecutive years of defeats in successive elections, is gaining new momentum ahead of the legislative elections at the end of the year.
During the election campaign. Alberto Nuñez Feijóo, popular leader, made these votes a referendum on Pedro Sánchez and it is expected that he will follow the same strategy in the coming months.
