“Logical result”. International leaders congratulate Erdogan on victory

Several heads of state, such as Zelensky, Putin, Macron and Maduro, congratulated the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his victory in the second round of the elections held this Sunday.

On the social network Twitter, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, congratulated Erdogan and said that he hopes to develop cooperation with Turkey for the “security and stability of Europe and further strengthen” the strategic partnership for the benefit of the two countries.

On the Kremlin website, Russian President Vladimir Putin, after congratulating the Turkish head of state, considered that his victory “is the logical result” of the work that lies ahead for the country, as well as “clear proof of the support of the Turkish people to their efforts to strengthen state sovereignty and pursue an independent foreign policy”.

Also on Twitter, French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that the two countries “face together immense challenges”, such as the return of peace to Europe and the future of the Euro-Atlantic Alliance.

“Together with President Erdogan, whom I congratulate on his re-election, we will continue to move forward,” Macron stressed.

Former US President Donald Trump, on the Truth Social social network, also congratulated Erdogan “for his great and well-deserved victory in Turkey”, considering him “a friend” he knows well, while Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro celebrated the victory election of his Turkish counterpart.

“Venezuela celebrates the triumph of our brother and friend Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who emerged victorious in the presidential and parliamentary elections,” Maduro wrote on his Twitter account, where he shared images of the Turkish head of state.

Congratulations also came from Armenia, with the Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, expressing the desire to “continue working together for a full normalization of relations” between the two countries.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been in power for 20 years, was re-elected after the second round of the presidential election, the Turkish Election Committee confirmed.

“According to the provisional results, it seems that Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been re-elected as President of the Republic,” the chairman of Turkey’s High Electoral Commission, Ahmet Yener, was quoted as saying by the state news agency Anadolu.

The final official results are expected to be announced early this week. Polling stations closed at 5:00 p.m. local time, two hours less in Lisbon.

The Turkish opposition today denounced irregularities in the second round of the presidential elections, such as physical attacks against electoral observers in the southwestern region and false votes.

Turkey has some 85 million inhabitants and more than 61 million registered voters in a process in which voting is compulsory.
