Uganda enacts tough new anti-gay law condemned by activists

Uganda’s president has enacted tough new anti-gay legislation, supported by many in the East African country but widely condemned by human rights activists and other organizations abroad.

The version of the bill signed by President Yoweri Museveni does not criminalize people who identify as LGBTQ, a key concern for activists who condemned an earlier version of the legislation as a flagrant attack on human rights.

However, the new law continues to provide for the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality”, defined as cases of sexual relations with people infected with HIV, as well as with minors and other vulnerable categories of people.

In a statement, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among said: The president “answered the cries of our people” by signing the bill.
