GNR rescued 151 migrants off the Italian coast of Crotone

The GNR, through the Coastal Control Unit, announced Monday that it had rescued 151 migrants on Saturday off the coast of Crotone, Italy, as part of the joint operation “THEMIS 2023”, which lasted more than 29 hours.

In a statement, the National Republican Guard (GNR) adds that “during the patrol and after the Italian authorities alerted about the displacement of a fishing boat suspected of carrying migrants on board, at 00:50 hours, the Coastal Patrol Boat” Boujdour “was activated to support the detection action”.

The GNR indicates that the fishing boat that was heading to the Italian coast was detected at 1:35 p.m. local time, having declared a search and rescue operation as it was a boat with more than a hundred migrants on board.

In the place, says the GNR, there was only the Coastal Patrol Boat “Bajador” and given the high number of people on board, instructions were given to maintain vigilance and wait for the arrival of another vessel belonging to the Coast Guard, to start the search. rescue operation.

“At 4:00 p.m. the transfer of migrants to the Portuguese boat was completed, with a total of 151 migrants, including 35 children,” says the guard.

The migrants were then taken to the port of Crotone, where they landed safely.

The GNR, through the Coastal Control Unit, designed the “Boxador” Coastal Patrol Boat in the Joint Operation “THEMIS 2023” – Italy, under the auspices of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX), in the field of operational coordination at the external borders of the European Union, to control migratory flows and prevent cross-border crime, which will last until July 12.
