Citizens outside the first legislatures in Spain after the failure in the local ones

The National Committee of Citizens decided this Tuesday not to present lists for the anticipated legislative elections on July 23 in Spain, considering that “the message of the local elections was very clear,” said the party’s general secretary, Adrián Vázquez.

According to Vázquez, the decision was made at an emergency meeting of Ciudadanos, the only party body that has the power to decide whether to run for election, and is also based on the idea that the party “is not seen as a transforming force.”

Since the electoral disaster of November 2019, which led to the resignation of Albert Rivera, Ciudadanos has been accumulating failures in the different elections in recent years.

Sunday’s regional and municipal elections were another major setback, as they failed to win representation in any of the disputed autonomous regions and lost almost all of the councilors elected four years ago.

According to the EuropaPress agency, not even the party’s national spokesperson, Patricia Guasp, managed to revalidate her seat in the Balearic Parliament, and the deputy mayor of Madrid, Begoña Villacís, also lost her seat.

Overall, with more than 97% of the votes counted, the PP was the party with the most votes in Sunday’s municipal elections in Spain, with 31.5% of the votes, followed by the PSOE, with 28.18%.

The results reflect a change compared to the previous municipal elections of 2019, in which the PSOE obtained 29.38% of the votes and the PP 22.62%.

This is also considered the first electoral victory of the PP in Spain since 2015. The results also confirm the progress of the extreme right, with VOX obtaining 7.19% of the votes in local elections, after having had 3.56%. in 2019.
