German far-left militants convicted of violence against neo-Nazis

A German court on Wednesday sentenced four far-left militants to prison for violent attacks against neo-Nazis and members of Germany’s far-right.

According to the France-Press news agency, the main defendant, Lina E., aged 28, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison. The other three arrested were sentenced by the court in Dresden (east) to prison terms of between two years and nine months and three years and nine months.

The militants were found guilty of several attacks against neo-Nazis and alleged far-right supporters in Wurzen, Leipzig and Eisenach that resulted in serious injuries between 2018 and 2020.

The regions of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) are strongholds of the country’s far right and neo-Nazi movement.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the German Constitution, the country’s information service, classified the four convicted in the category of “autonomously violent”.

“The case is exemplary of the high potential for violence and the degree of radicalization prevailing in certain parts of far-left circles and thus represents a new development in left-wing extremism,” said the intelligence director. service, Thomas Haldenwang.

Far-right violence, meanwhile, has been ranked by authorities as the biggest threat to Germany’s security, following several attacks in recent years, particularly against elected officials.
