Young man fires multiple shots at Russian recruitment center

The head of a recruitment center in the city of Ust-Ilimsk, in Russia’s far east, was shot dead in an attack on Monday and is in serious condition, Irkutsk region governor Igor Kobzev said.

“In Ust-Ilimsk, a young man fired several shots at the recruitment office. Military Commissioner (in charge of the office) Alexandr Vladimirovich Eliseyev is in intensive care and in a very serious condition,” the governor stated on the social network Telegram .

“What happened does not cross my mind. I am ashamed that this is happening at a time when we must be united. We must not fight against each other, but against real threats,” said Kobzev, who ordered the measures. security are enhanced.

Kobzev added that the gunman, whose identity he did not reveal, was being held by police.

The Irkutsk Commission of Inquiry, quoted by the TASS news agency, said an investigation has been opened against a 25-year-old detainee and also stressed that “a team is working on the scene”.

“The suspect is being questioned. The motives for the crime are being clarified,” according to the committee.

Since September 21, when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization of reservists due to the war in Ukraine, there have been several attacks on recruitment agencies, but so far they have not been carried out with firearms.

More than 2,000 people were detained in dozens of Russian cities as they protested the mobilization, a government measure that stipulates that 300,000 reservists will be called up for the war in Ukraine – which began on Feb. 24 -, according to Russia’s defense ministry.

This Sunday, police in Dagestan fired shots into the air at a demonstration blocking the road between the towns of Khasavyurt and Makhachkala to protest mobilization in the town of Endirei.

According to the Tut Dagestan Telegram station, 110 reservists, some of whom have just been demobilized, were called up in Endirei, with a population of just over 7,000.
