The Popular Party wants a “sufficient majority” in the legislative elections to govern

The leader of the Spanish Popular Party (PP) has assured this Wednesday that his objective in the early legislative elections on July 23 is to achieve a “sufficient majority” to govern, refusing to talk about alliances with VOX.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo was speaking at the Cercle d’Economia de Barcelona, on his first visit to Catalonia after the victory of the PP in the municipal and regional elections on Sunday and the call for early legislative elections for July, due to the poor results of the PSOE of the head of government, Pedro Sánchez.

Regarding the early elections, which were scheduled for six months in December, Feijóo said that the Spanish have “much more responsibility and much more to gain by voting than ever before.”

Asked about the possible need to reach an agreement with the far-right VOX, the party that grew the most in relation to the previous local and regional elections, Feijóo avoided answering directly, pointing out that an absolute majority can be achieved, even if the future is not seen. .

“Why do they say that there are no absolute majorities? I assure you that within my political approach I am not going to waste a minute explaining what my objective is not,” he explained.

Next, the PP leader explained his goal for the July 23 elections. “That in Spain there is a government that has a sufficient majority to carry out the reforms that the country needs,” he said, without ruling out an alliance with the Socialists (PSOE) and other political formations.

Regarding the advancement of the elections, Feijóo added that he believes that the Spanish must decide if they want to continue with “a frivolous, inexperienced and inconstant policy” or open “a stage of solidity, democratic regeneration and management of important issues”.

“We are going to see struggles to seal coalitions, we are going to see negotiations in electoral list positions and offers that only serve to sustain stories in the face of bad expectations,” he warned, guaranteeing that he will not waste time with these matters.

“I am fully aware of the challenges that we will have to face from July 23 if we receive the confidence of the majority of citizens and I am convinced that we will be able to bring together a large majority of citizens to help us achieve it”, He concluded.

The PP was the most voted party in the autonomous and municipal elections on Sunday in Spain, followed by the Socialists, who suffered a heavy defeat.

Vox, from the extreme right, also won victory, both in the regional, where it increased its representation in the regional parliaments, and in the municipal, where it reached 7.19 percent of the overall vote (it had had 3, 56 percent in the previous municipal). parliaments). .

The result was considered the PP’s first electoral victory in Spain since 2015, but the party will need the support of VOX to govern several regions and municipalities.

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Monday the dissolution of Parliament and the anticipation of national legislative elections for July 23, after the defeat of the Socialists, which he leads.
