At least three people were killed and ten injured in an airstrike in Kiev on Thursday, Ukrainian soldiers reported.
After 17 drone (unmanned aerial vehicles) and rocket attacks on the Ukrainian capital in May, Russian forces hit the capital early in the morning with ground-launched missiles.
“Three killed and four injured in Desnyansky district”wrote the Kiev military administration on the Telegram platform.
The same source said only one child was killed in the attack, after initially stating that two children were killed.
The number of victims was the highest recorded in the attacks on Kiev in the past month.
The attack also damaged apartment buildings, a medical clinic, a water main and cars.
Ukraine’s General Staff said the air force intercepted the ten missiles, which it identified as Iskander short-range ballistic missiles.
The information was confirmed on the same platform by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Several Russian missiles were fired at the Ukrainian capital this week. On Monday, an unusual daytime attack on Kiev forced residents to seek shelter.
Since the invasion began in February last year, Russia has repeatedly attacked Kiev with drones and missiles, but attacks on the capital have intensified significantly over the past month as Ukraine prepares for a counter-offensive.
Ukrainian air defenses have become increasingly effective at intercepting Russian drones and missiles, but the resulting debris can start fires and injure people on the ground.
Debris fell on a children’s hospital and an adjacent multi-story building in the Desnianskyi district. Two schools and a police station were damaged.
In another district, Dniprovskyi, a residential building was damaged by burning debris. Several windows were shattered and parked cars caught fire with debris littered the road and courtyards. In the Darnytskyi district, a water pipe and a residential building were damaged and windows shattered.
Last month, Ukraine also claimed to have shot down some of Russia’s Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, which Russian President Vladimir Putin sees as a key competitive advantage.
On Wednesday, Russian forces carried out three airstrikes in the southern Kherson region, along with missile strikes and heavy artillery strikes in other parts of the region.
