The euro zone inflation rate fell sharply to 6.1% in May

The annual inflation rate in the euro zone fell, in May, to 6.1%, driven by the slowdown in the increase in prices in the food component and by the deflation of energy, Eurostat estimates this Thursday.

In May 2022, the annual inflation rate was 8.1% in euro countries and in April 2023 it was 7.0%. According to the rapid estimate of the European statistical service, considering the components of inflation, that of food, alcohol and tobacco presented, in May, the highest rate, of 12.5%, but one point below the 13.5% of April.

In the energy component, on the other hand, prices rose from 2.5% in April to a fall of 1.7% in May.
