Ukrainian air defenses shot down a total of 15 cruise missiles and 21 Iranian Shahed drones between Thursday night and Friday in and around Kiev, the Ukrainian air force said.
“The invaders [russos] continues to try to terrorize the Ukrainian capital with drone strikes [veículos aéreos não tripulados] and missiles,” the air force said in a statement.
Earlier, in a first assessment, kyiv’s military administration had said that “more than 30 targets” had been shot down.
According to the air force, Russia launched an attack on Thursday night, in two stages.
The first consisted of sending kamikaze drones, which entered from the south of the capital around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, local time (9:00 a.m. in Lisbon).
In the second, cruise missiles were used, fired by aircraft located in the Caspian Sea area. These projectiles entered Ukrainian airspace around 03:00 local time this Friday (01:00 in Lisbon).
“All 15 cruise missiles and 21 attack drones were destroyed by air defenses of the air force in cooperation with other components of the Ukrainian armed forces,” the official statement said.
So far, there is no information about possible victims. kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said no calls to medical services were made during or after the overnight attack.
Russia has increased the intensity and frequency of drone and missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital since late April.
Although the Western defense systems that Ukraine has installed in kyiv shoot down almost all the shells, several people have been killed in recent days by falling debris from the interceptions.
Ukrainian forces said they believe Moscow wants to demoralize the population and deplete the ammunition of Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems with these attacks.
kyiv is trying to convince the allies to send more Patriot missile systems to better defend the territory from air attacks.
