Brazil encourages the West to take Russia’s concerns into account

Lula da Silva’s advisor, Celso Amorim, considered in an interview with the newspaper The Financial Times, that the West should take into account the concerns of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also believes that the West’s belligerence towards Moscow risks provoking a wider conflict.

“We don’t want a third world war. And even if we don’t have it, we don’t want another Cold War,” Celso Amorim said. “If we want peace, the concerns of all countries in the region must be taken into account. The only other alternative is total military victory over Russia. You know what comes next? Not me.”

Despite Brazil’s official condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Brazilian President Lula da Silva has been accused of “pro-Russian neutrality”.. Lula da Silva stated that Kiev bears as much responsibility for the conflict as Moscow and accused Washington of encouraging violence.

Celso Amorim said one of Russia’s concerns is national security, citing the country’s complaints about being surrounded by the West and NATO.

“We cannot judge the situation of the past year and a half. This is a decades-old situation. Russia has concerns that need to be addressed. This is not Ukraine’s fault. Ukraine is a victim of the remnants of the Cold War.”
