Guineans elect this Sunday new deputies and government party

The polls for the legislative elections this Sunday in Guinea-Bissau opened at 07:00 local time (08:00 in Lisbon) for nearly 900,000 Guineans to elect the 102 new deputies and the party that will form the Government.

These are the seventh legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau since the opening to multi-party rule, in 1994, and 893,618 voters are registered to vote, in the country and in the diaspora.

Polls close at 5:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. in Lisbon).

The main parties are the Movement for Democratic Alternation (Madem-G15), currently in government, the Aliança Inclusiva Platform (PAI) – Terra Ranka coalition, led by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC, in the opposition), the Social Renewal Party (PRS) and the Guinean Workers’ Party (PTG), of Botché Candé, current Minister of Agriculture.

The United People’s Assembly – Democratic Party of Guinea-Bissau (APU-PDGB), led by Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam, has had a more discreet presence in the electoral campaign and the head of government has predicted that no party will achieve a majority, it is you need a consensus to form the executive.

Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embaló dissolved parliament on May 16, 2022 and initially scheduled elections for December 18 of that year, but legislative elections were later rescheduled for June 4.

In total, there are around 200 observers in the country, according to the CNE, specifically 60 from the ECOWAS short-term mission, headed by former Cape Verdean president Jorge Carlos Fonseca, in addition to the 15 already on the ground, 29 of the African Union, headed by former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano, while the mission of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), made up of 27 elements, is headed by former Timorese Foreign Minister Alberto Carlos.
